Panasonic NN-CF778SBPQ

Panasonic NN-CF778SBPQ 4.5 out of 5

Following up our recent reviews of combination microwaves is a look at the latest model from Panasonic, which is made with the larger household in mind.  The Panasonic NN-CF778SBPQ is a Combination Microwave Oven aimed at medium to large sized families and kitchens, providing 1000w of power and substantial 27 litre capacity.  Finished in a fingerprint-free brushed stainless steel and smart black exterior, the NN-CF778SBPQ features a simple twelve button control system, which is essentially ten, as two of the buttons are reserved for starting and stopping the appliance.  This is increasingly rare for a high end microwave as, in our experience, the more expensive models are usually more difficult to operate due to the increased functions the manufacturer has had to cram in.  So is it as good as the specification implies?  Keep reading to find out!

  • What is a microwave?

A microwave is a common kitchen appliance chiefly used for the heating and cooking of food. It works by directing electromagnetic radiation at the food item, causing water molecules within to vibrate and rotate. This movement causes a build up of heat, which is transferred to other nearby molecules, thus heating up and cooking the food. As the majority of different food types contain a fairly uniform and well distributed quantity of water molecules, microwave ovens are a very effective method of heating, cooking and defrosting.

Modern microwaves are available in three main types; a solo microwave oven which provides the basic microwave function, a grill microwave oven which provides the addition of an electric grill facility, and a combination model which typically also provides a convection oven feature for baking.

All three groups tend to include the same core features, such as timer, a selection of different power settings ranging from defrost to high, a built in child lock and are available in a range of colours, power outputs (measured in watts) and capacities (measured in cubic litres).

Popular manufacturers of microwave ovens include Bosch, Daewoo, De'longhi, Fagor, Hinari, Igenix, Panasonic, Russell Hobbs, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, Wellco and Whirlpool.
